Description

How can we make video content more engaging and accessible for every learner? What happens when a key visual or spoken cue isn't available to some students?

This 45-minute session explores how thoughtful use of captions and audio descriptions can transform videos into inclusive learning tools that support comprehension, equity, and student success. Participants will learn practical techniques for creating and editing accurate captions as well as strategies for integrating audio descriptions that enrich visual storytelling.

Session Objectives
  • Identify accessibility standards for video captions and audio descriptions.

  • Write or record concise audio descriptions that convey essential visual information.

  • Evaluate video materials for accessibility, clarity, and pedagogical effectiveness.

  • Integrate inclusive media practices to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.

This intermediate workshop will provide you with adaptable techniques for more inclusive course design.

This session will be facilitated by Dr. Mariann Hawken, Director of Instructional Technology, and Dr. Ben Amudzi, Instructional Technology Specialist. Open to all faculty and instructional staff. Experience with recording video and writing image descriptions is highly recommended.
